How would I assess a preschooler (age 3) for special education services?

Lashawnda Anteby: Before anything, his hearing needs to be checked by an audiologist, no one less. FACT: By age two, 80% of what a child says should be understood by people outside of the household. If nothing is getting in(his hearing) nothing is going to come out (speech.)I respectfully suggest that you need a formal evaluation. Pull in your resources, you have cause, please get this child help, now. Even 3 or six months at this age, is a HUGE loss, which will cause milestone delays as far as his progression into k-12....Show more

Joni Ziak: talk to a speech therapist. he can tell u the tongue exercises and how to make them fun. get him hearing tested make sure there is no reason for his speech difficulties. like a hearing impairment. what they did for my daughter before she went to kindergarten was put her through all the paces. she had to walk heel to toe fwd and bkward, jump 2 feet and 1 foot. catch a ball thrown easily toward the hands, she had to know her ! address, colors, draw a circle, square and other easy geometric figures. know her b'date month day, year, numbers to 5 basic colors. alphabet to e. u need to also find out if the parents are talking to him at home or if he is basically by himself all day long. he won't develop as fast if there is no communication/play time. u could also try easter seals foundation they have a good network and offer help. basically find out where he is with his motor skills and work on the worst ones first. if it is balance there is somethng in the ears. look for the tell tale clues. it might be as simple as no one at home talks to /plays with him. remember to be patient he can only learn at his pace, not yours. good luck...Show more

Dee Depung: Good for you for noticing his challenges. If he is three and the parents request it, the public school district is required to have a QUALIFIED professional evaluate his needs and provide recommendations for accommodations and services to su! pport his learning. If you are working in his class it would be! very helpful to the parents and the evaluator if you were to provide them with detailed objective observations (anecdotes) of situations that you feel were atypical for a child his age.If you have screening tools use those. If not the evaluator will probably ask you to complete a few any of theirs.Diagnosing a child's special needs can be very complicated please leave the diagnosis to a professional. They'll provide you with proven strategies for helping him as well.Good Luck!...Show more

Lynn Melbourne: I know this is part of your class and that you're not really assessing someone for Special Education. You need to assess the following areas social/emotional, motor (fine and gross), self-help, language (receptive and expressive), and cognition. The Hawaii Early Learning Profile (HELP) is a good start. You should definitely speak to a Certified Speech and Language Pathologist (one who is certified by the American Speech and Hearing Association). Another good asse! ssment to use is the Mac Arthur Communication Inventory. Since you are in school and you haven't learned the lingo yet, we no longer use the term "regular ed." The proper term is General Education. When you suspect a child may have a disability, you go begin Response to Intervention. There are three levels of RTI. This website may give you some ideas to help you with your assignment.http://www.rtinetwork.org/Pre-KAnother great resource is a book called the Pre-referral Resource Intervention Manual. http://www.hes-inc.com/hes.cgi/00670.htmlGood luck to you. I hope you succeed in your class....Show more

Antone Youla: Your job is to see that he gets a full evaluation by people qualified to do it. Congratulations for being aware that something is wrong but if you are still studying you are not qualified to do a full evaluation. It would be helpful to share your observations with whoever does the evaluation as long as you have the parents' permission.
