Cell Phones and Space?

Arlene Maycumber: Not sure what to say

Gennie Shauer: Cell phones work by connecting to cell towers, here on terra firma. There are Satellite phones that connect directly to satellites, and those would work in space.

Dalila Yoon: Cell phones work in space. It's true that satellite phones connect directly to satellites while regular cellphones connect only to service towers on earth. But the only reason why the regular cellphones connect to towers is because of the limited range of a cellphone transmission which is roughly 4 km. This is not enough to reach orbiting satellites. (Satellite phones work by focusing a strong signal directly to a satellite which greatly increase it's range. hence the long antenna and large battery)If a satellite is close enough to you while you are in space and it is equipped with the right equipment to receive a GSM signal. then by all means, your cellphone will work and be able to make a call....Show more

Wilfred Santacruce:! 2

Ronnie Sardi: There are satellite Cell Phones which would work in space but the regular ones connect to the provider's tower and from the tower it goes to the satellite.

Reyes Brunell: possible yeah
